OZO CHAIR

PC: Keli Dzikunoo
In the Igbo language, Ozo refers to a prestigious title or rank in the traditional hierarchical system of the Igbo people of Nigeria. This title is usually given to individuals within the tribe who have achieved a high level of success, integrity, and moral standing within the community. They are seen as custodians of tradition, arbitrators in disputes, and influential figures within the community. Once given the Ozo title, the individual is recognized as a chieftain––a respected member of the community and expected to uphold certain responsibilities and obligations. The Ozo Chair is a mechanism for Igwe’s reflection of the nuanced social, familial, and cultural expectations he holds within his community, tribe, and family. To note, Igwe is currently in a waiting process for his own chieftaincy title. His forefathers, both his grandfather and father specifically, both held chieftain positions in their tribe. Igwe is expected to be next in line, however, he must also earn his revered honor. A balance of anticipation and expectation, as well as pride and fragility are at play in the Ozo Chair’s design.
